ModVans Popup Top
The ModVans Popup Top is the largest and best looking popup top on the market. To make our popup top strong and light, we used the same techniques used to build high end airplane wings. The popup top is a vacuum infusion composite sandwich panel made with the highest quality materials. It is strong enough to hold A/Cs, cargo and be walked on.
Our popup top beds are the largest, strongest and most comfortable. Our popup top lift mechanism can lift accessories such as roof racks, solar panels and rooftop A/Cs. We designed our tops so that the lift mechanism is outside the van. This keeps it from intruding into your personal space or interfering with your bedding when the top is lowered.
The popup top is fully-electric. A simple rocker switch moves the popup top up and down. The popup top canvas is marine grade and consists of 3 layers:
- Mesh Bug Screen
- Zippered clear plastic window
- Privacy cover with velcro straps and closures
The ModVans Popup Top price includes:
- Finished popup top ceiling with headliner and LED lights.
- Finished van ceiling surrounding the popup top (inquire for additional details).
- Installation at our factory in Sparks, NV or crating and shipping to your upfitter for install.
The standard exterior finish is a high grade, gray "sanding gelcoat," formulated to underlay a sealer plus OEM matching base coat + clear coat paint. You can also have us paint your top to match your van's exterior color with high-quality OEM matching automotive sealer, base and clear coat.
The ModVans Popup Top Bed is not included and can be purchased separately.
A van based RV drives great, gets good gas mileage and is easy to park, but it has a lot less interior space than a traditional Class A or Class C RV. It is quite a puzzle to squeeze in beds, toilet, appliances, dogs and a bunch of gear. One straightforward way to get a lot of space inside the van is to put the space hogging bed (sold separately) on the roof. This also provides the best way to add a second bed in a relatively small van when compared with "bunk beds" or other solutions that completely lack privacy and cause claustrophobia.
As weekend warriors and soccer parents, we drive a lot and one of the things we really didn't like about our traditional Class C RV was the high maintenance driving. After a lot of reading and some test drives, we became convinced that a modern van with a popup top would provide the best driving experience.
Another nice benefit a popup top adds is the ability to stand up inside a "low roof" van. The popup top has a Sleep Mode and a Stand Mode. In Sleep Mode, the bed panels are resting on the edges of beams installed in the roof cutout. Access to the bed is though a large opening between the front bed panel and the roof cutout at the front. The bed has plenty of room to sit up and move around. In Stand Mode, the bed panels are stacked in the back or taken out of the van to give over 7' of standing height inside the van in low and medium roof vans.
Our popup top install was carefully engineered to more than replace the strength lost by cutting open the roof. Our lift mechanism is strong and reliable. Camping in wind, rain or cold is not a problem.
Van Size Details
Choose your Roof Height and Vehicle Length to see photos specific to your van size.
At this time, we only install Popup Tops on the models listed on the product page for selection. We cannot install popup tops on low roof passenger vans due to the placement of air bags.
On the High Roof Extended Length van, we only install a wedge shaped popup top at this time (choose High Roof, Extended Length to see photos). The wedge popup top can be notched to allow installation of a fan or A/C as seen in the photos. Only specific A/C models will fit - inquire for additional details.
All other van sizes use the straight lift popup top. Low Roof models can lift about 200lbs while Medium and High Roof Long models can lift about 120lbs. The 12V A/C we recommend weights about 90lbs. Rooftop fans weigh less.
